Description
Located in the downtown Inter Pipeline Calgary office, the individual in the Cost Accountant role will report to the Manager, Accounting. The Cost Accountant will assist with the accounting and analysis of manufactured polypropylene & feedstocks. The Cost Accountant will monitor and analyze the cost of feedstocks, the cost of manufacturing polypropylene and the performance results of the plants. The Cost Accountant role will focus on Cost Reporting, Process Improvement and SOX Compliance. This role plays a critical part in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of our cost accounting processes.
Within the business unit is the Heartland Petrochemical Complex (HPC), a world-scale integrated complex comprised of a propane dehydrogenation plant, a polypropylene plant and a co-generation central utilities block. HPC has been designed to convert locally sourced, low-cost propane into approximately 525,000 tonnes per year of polypropylene, a high value, easy to transport plastic. Polypropylene is used in the manufacturing of a wide range of finished products, such as consumer packaging, textiles, automobile components, medical equipment and currency.
Key Activities and Responsibilities
• Perform month-end accounting entries, inventory valuation, and turnover analysis for feedstocks, polypropylene, and finished goods
• Production Reconciliation: perform monthly inventory production reconciliations and review costs for accuracy
• Analyze variances for purchased and manufactured goods, identifying trends and performance drivers
• Material Management (MM) Close & Reporting: Ensure financial accuracy and completeness under tight month-end and MM deadlines
• Intercompany & Eliminations: prepare feedstock intercompany transactions and perform inter-segment cost elimination analysis, working with other business units to ensure entries are cleared
• Assist in presenting monthly manufacturing results to the Heartland leadership team, including cost-to-produce, variance, and trending analysis
• Assist with the development of new products with the Marketing, Technical Services and Customer Service teams and ensure accurately reflected in SAP
• Assist in preparing the annual budget and monthly forecasts for feedstock and polypropylene costs
• Process Improvement: Drive the development of efficient manufacturing reporting and actively implement business process improvements
• Conduct G/L account reconciliations and provide recommendations to address reconciling item on all inventory accounts and related cost of sales accounts
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Build strong relationships across functions including Marketing, Commercial, PSA, Operations, Volumetrics, and Revenue
• Prioritize day-to-day tasks to meet overlapping deadlines and company guidelines
• Assist ad hoc projects as needed
Education, Skills and Experience
• CPA designation required
• Minimum 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in cost accounting or a related field
• Experience in a manufacturing business preferred
• Proven experience managing month end close processes and consistently delivering accurate results on time
• Strong understanding of SOX Compliance, internal controls, and audit processes
• Experience in a manufacturing business preferred
• Experience with SAP and Power BI is an asset
• Strong attention to detail, organization, and accuracy
• Effective team player that can manage relationships with interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral)
• Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Strong analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities
• Self starter with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines in a dynamic, fast paced, growth oriented environment
