Description

Located out of our Calgary City Centre office, the Advisor, Regulatory & Environment will report to the Manager, Land, Regulatory and Environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, maintaining and implementing programs that support the safe, reliable and compliant operation of our pipeline assets. More specifically, this role supports Pipeline Operations by maintaining, implementing, monitoring and reporting compliance to promote industry leading performance in regulatory and environmental management.  

Key Activities and Responsibilities

Regulatory  

  • Coordinate the preparation of applications to regulatory agencies for new projects and for modifications to existing assets 
  • Responsible for review and preparation of pipeline approvals and compliance documentation to AER, AEP and ER 
  • Manage positive relationships with AER, Alberta Environment and Parks, local Municipal governments and select federal agencies unless responsibilities are delegated to a subject matter expert 
  • Provide regulatory input to project teams at the planning stage to identify and assist in the management of technical and non-technical risks that could arise during the regulatory approval process, including advice in expected realistic regulatory approval timeline that should be incorporated in the overall development and execution objectives of these projects. 
  • Monitor pending regulatory changes through regulatory relationships, industry associations  
  • Preparation of and/or review of regulatory permit applications ( AER, AEP, EPEA, CER, etc.) for new or modified assets 
  • Familiar with key regulations that impact the business  

Environment 

  • Assist the operations team in the planning, implementation and assessment of environmental projects or priorities 
  • Advise on required regulatory reporting and ensure environmental compliance is maintained 
  • Coordinate the necessary notifications in support of operational incidents 
  • Coordinate the necessary approvals/permits to support pipeline operations  
  • Provide technical support and coordinate and manage environmental monitoring programs (e.g. industrial runoff and wastewater, groundwater, soil management, air emissions) 
  • Coordinate and manage activities of external consultants hired to assist with environmental operations. 
  • Coordinate, compile and/or submit pertinent environment/regulatory reporting as required 
  • Maintain the environmental operating procedures and manage environmental records/files 
  • Develop, update and effectively communicate environmental operating practices. 

Education, Skills and Experience

  • A degree in environmental sciences, forestry, agriculture or similar discipline is preferred 
  • 5 – 7 years of environmental industry experience, preferably in the energy sector 
  • Pipeline experience in environmental assessments or monitoring is preferred 
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and setting work schedule and activities in a coordinated manner 
  • Knowledge of Alberta regulatory requirements for oil and gas operations with emphasis on AER/AEP practices and requirements 
  • Knowledgeable in Government applications and submissions software 
  • Knowledge of provincial environmental legislation/regulations in Alberta and pipeline approvals is an asset 
  • Field experience in environmental inspections, site assessments and remediation within the energy sector is preferred.
