Description
Located out of our Calgary office, the individual in the Analyst, Trading role will be an integral member of the Inter Pipeline Crude Marketing team. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the Marketing Business Unit in executing asset optimization activities by providing analytical insight, maintaining models and data accuracy, communicating marketing operational plans, and assisting in asset performance tracking. The Analyst will apply strong modeling and analytical skills, business acumen, and attention to detail to help enhance crude optimization strategies, support marketing and commercial decision-making, and help maintain efficient movement of crude across IPL’s pipeline systems. This position collaborates regularly with internal and external stakeholders and plays a key role in the day-to-day operational activities of the Crude Supply & Marketing and Trading groups.
Key Activities and Responsibilities
• Maintain and continuously improve models, quality datasets, and key performance indicators
• Conduct regular analyses of market trends, pricing, and qualities to identify optimization opportunities.
• Assist in scheduling of crude, condensate, and other products into pipelines, terminals, and third party facilities.
• Monitor asset performance and ensure operational alignment between supply, logistics, and marketing.
• Coordinate with internal stakeholders (operations, quality, accounting, supply) to proactively resolve issues impacting schedules, quality, supply, or settlement.
• Maintain pricing databases, verify contract details, and conduct basic contract and pricing reviews.
• Support monthly accrual and invoicing processes through data validation and timely communication with Finance.
• Contribute to IPL’s commodity forecasting and planning processes.
• Develop and maintain market intelligence related to crude quality, pricing trends, competitive activity, and regional supply dynamics.
• Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal teams and external counterparties.
• Communicate clearly and professionally to support operational execution and commercial outcomes.
• Collaborate with other analysts to develop short, medium, and long-term market fundamentals.
Education, Skills and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Engineering, or a related field.
• 2–4 years of work experience, ideally within midstream or energy markets of oil & gas.
• Exposure to crude oil marketing, scheduling, and/or stream quality management is considered an asset.
• Strong analytical and quantitative skills with a high attention to detail.
• Proficient in Microsoft Excel and data management tools; experience developing and improving models is an asset.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work cross functionally.
• Demonstrated ability to manage routine tasks independently and handle moderate complexity issues with guidance.
