Inter Pipeline Ltd. (IPL) is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Legal Counsel (Heartland) to join its Heartland Business Unit. Reporting to the Associate General Counsel, the Legal Counsel will provide practical, business-focused legal advice across a broad range of corporate and commercial matters, including supply chain, and commercial operations, polypropylene sales, rail, and site operations.
This professional role offers a unique opportunity to be a key legal resource on a small, high performing team. While the role is an individual contributor position, it involves frequent interaction with IPL executives, senior internal stakeholders, and external counsel, as well as engagement with counterparties outside of the organization.
The Legal Counsel role provides an opportunity to move beyond purely technical legal analysis to deliver solutions that balance legal risk with business objectives. Embedded in business, this position will gain a deep understanding of operations and strategy and effective communication.
Key Activities and Responsibilities
• Independently review, draft, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements, including supply chain contracts, polypropylene sales, transportation, storage, rail, NDAs, and licensor agreements.
• Support supply chain activities, including RFPs, contract templates, interpretation issues, warranty and indemnity claims, and strategic guidance to the business.
• Manage day to day commercial issues with suppliers, buyers, and other counterparties, including contract interpretation, risk allocation and dispute resolution.
• Manage external counsel and collaborate with internal legal teams as required.
• Proactively identify, prioritize, and mitigate legal and commercial risks while supporting business objectives.
• Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders through responsive, solution-oriented legal support, including availability for urgent matters when needed.
Education, Skills and Experience
• Qualified to practice law in Alberta and be a member in good standing with the Law Society of Alberta (which itself requires a law degree recognized in Canada).
• 3-6 years of post-call experience related to corporate and commercial legal work, some in-house experience preferred.
• Keen interest in learning Inter Pipeline’s business and has a strong work ethic and a personal drive to deliver an extremely high quality of legal service.
• Strong oral and written communication skills are very important for this role, as well as the ability to cultivate strong relationships and to support on a wide variety of initiatives.
