Description

Inter Pipeline is seeking a highly skilled Specialist, Commodity Risk Management to support our growing commodity optimization and trading activities. This role is ideal for an experienced risk professional who thrives in a fast-paced trading environment and is motivated by ownership, precision, and meaningful impact.


As a key member of the Middle Office, you will provide independent oversight of trading activities, ensure P&L integrity, strengthen risk frameworks, and support the maturity of our ETRM environment. This role combines technical depth, strong judgement, and leadership—helping enable the scalable growth of Inter Pipeline’s optimization activities

Key Activities and Responsibilities

Daily Risk Reporting

· Lead the design, execution, and improvement of daily and monthly P&L reconciliation and attribution across physical and derivative portfolios.

· Validate trading results through independent P&L explanations, ensuring alignment between front-office activity, ETRM valuations, and financial reporting.

· Identify and resolve P&L discrepancies, escalating only material issues with clear root-cause analysis and recommended actions.

· Proactively anticipate potential control or valuation issues based on experience in high-volume, fast-moving trading environments.


Derivatives & Clearing Oversight

· Oversee the full lifecycle of derivative transactions, including trade capture validation, settlement, margining, and clearinghouse reconciliation.

· Act as the primary coordination point with Treasury and external clearing partners on valuation, margin, and settlement matters.


Risk Metrics & Control Frameworks

· Ensure accurate calculation, monitoring, and enforcement of VaR, stop-loss, and position limits.

· Assess the ongoing suitability of risk methodologies as trading strategies evolve.

· Provide insightful, summarized risk commentary highlighting trends, exceptions, and emerging exposures.

 

Risk Committee & Senior Governance Reporting

· Lead preparation and delivery of quarterly Commodity Risk reporting to the Risk Committee.

· Present independent assessments of trading performance, risk exposures, limit utilization, and control effectiveness.

· Serve as a subject matter expert during governance discussions, addressing methodology, controls, ETRM alignment, and trading outcomes.

· Coordinate inputs from Trading, Finance, Risk, and IT to ensure accuracy and consistency.


ETRM System Ownership & Process Maturity

· Drive the transition of manual or interim processes into the ETRM system to support scale and operational resilience.

· Act as SME for ETRM configuration related to valuation, risk reporting, and control logic.

· Partner with IT and business stakeholders to design, test, and implement system enhancements that support optimization trading requirements

Education, Skills and Experience

· Degree in Finance, Economics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative discipline.

· Professional designation required: CPA, CFA, FRM, or ERP.

· Minimum 10+ years’ experience in commodity trading, risk management, or Middle Office roles, with significant hands-on experience in risk and product control.

· Strong, hands-on experience with ETRM systems; candidates with Openlink Endur experience will be strongly advantaged.

· Demonstrated experience operating within a leading commodity trading organization, supporting active physical and derivative portfolios in a front-to-back control capacity.

· Proven progression into lead-level responsibilities, including ownership of control processes, mentoring junior staff, and acting as a subject matter expert within the function.

· Advanced proficiency in Excel; PowerBI, SQL, Python, and/or VBA considered strong assets.

· Deep practical understanding of risk management & reporting within a live trading environment, including the interaction between trading activity, valuation, risk metrics and financial outcomes.

· Ability to apply seasoned judgement to ambiguous or time-sensitive issues where process discipline and market intuition must be balanced.

· Clear, concise communicator capable of translating complexity into decision-relevant insights for executive audiences.

· Demonstrated capability to set standards, guide others and manage delivery within demanding trading environments.

Hours

Monday – Friday, 40 hours per week
