Job Description
Inter Pipeline is seeking an experienced Natural Gas Trader to join the Marketing department, reporting to the Director of Asset Optimization and Analytics. This role will work closely with Inter Pipeline’s natural gas consuming assets and ensure that daily operational and balancing requirements are met. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual to build out Inter Pipeline’s internal processes and overall presence in the Western Canadian natural gas market, which will involve leading the creation and transacting of suitable optimization and risk management strategies. In addition, this role will contribute to the formation and execution of Inter Pipeline’s hedging strategy program, which covers Inter Pipeline’s various assets and commodity exposures
Key Activities and Responsibilities
- Develop and execute a physical natural gas trading process to support the procurement of natural gas for Inter Pipeline’s daily asset requirements
- Ensure that positions are properly scheduled and balanced on the pipeline system and that Inter Pipeline remains within tolerance
- Conduct in-depth analysis of natural gas market conditions in Western Canada and perform optimization activities where appropriate
- Leverage market intelligence and forecasting models, in collaboration with the Financial Traders, to create and execute Inter Pipeline’s complex hedge strategies.
- Collaborate closely within Marketing as well as with the Facilities, Heartland, and Risk Management business units to ensure that natural gas trading activities are captured and reported correctly for internal stakeholders
- Provide leadership and cross-training support to team members and create gas trading coverage
- Grow and maintain Inter Pipeline’s relationships with industry participants across the natural gas value chain (i.e natural gas producers, banking institutions, trading organizations, etc.)
- Delivering market updates to senior management and key stakeholders on the performance of the natural gas market and our associated transactions
Education, Skills and Experience
- Minimum 5 – 7 years of experience trading / managing assets in natural gas markets
- Experience working in Alberta natural gas markets and a strong understanding of the North American pipeline system
- Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to interpret complex market data and develop appropriate trading strategies.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and deliver positive results
- Strong knowledge of natural gas trading processes and understanding the front-office to back-office implications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, Engineering, or a related field
- A professional designation is considered an asset
- Strong experience with Excel and data analytics; such as the use of Python and PowerBI
- Familiarity with ETRM systems; such as Endur, is a plus
Hours
Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week. Occasional weekend coverage is required.
