Job Description

Located out of our Calgary office and reporting into the Manager, Health and Safety, the Senior Advisor, Health & Safety is responsible for leading the coordination, development, implementation, and sustainment of enterprise-wide health and safety (H&S) programs and initiatives. This role requires close collaboration with all Business Units to advance Inter Pipeline’s H&S programs and organizational culture. The Senior Advisor plays a key role in progressing strategic H&S initiatives that promote innovation, optimize operational practices, mitigate risk, and deliver effective solutions to end users. 

Key Activities and Responsibilities

  • Design and present business cases that articulate the value of H&S projects and initiatives to end users and decision-makers. 
  • Develop and implement strategic H&S programs and initiatives aligned with organizational priorities. 
  • Support cultural change initiatives, safety leadership programs, and behavioral safety strategies. 
  • Create project charters and plans to ensure the effective delivery of H&S initiatives. 
  • Establish and track performance metrics and evaluation criteria to measure program effectiveness. 
  • Facilitate workshops and collaborative planning sessions with stakeholders to support H&S initiative development and implementation. 
  • Foster and maintain strong collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Develop, update, and manage H&S policies, standards, quick-reference guides, and other documentation. 
  • Deliver H&S training programs designed to build organizational capability and awareness. 
  • Monitor evolving occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations and industry best practices and recommend proactive change management strategies. 
  • Act as a subject matter expert (SME) in OHS, interpreting legislative requirements, advising on best practices, and recommending risk treatment strategies. 
  • Conduct and support risk assessments and contribute to the maintenance of the enterprise-wide H&S risk register. 
  • Design and disseminate H&S campaigns, communications, and awareness materials. 
  • Analyze H&S performance data and recommend actionable improvements. 
  • Support and participate in internal H&S assurance activities, including audits and reviews. 
  • Support incident reviews to identify systemic and cultural gaps. 
  • Oversee and contribute to the effective implementation and maintenance of the Office Safety Program. 
  • Provide H&S coaching and advisory support to leaders and Joint Health and Safety Committee members. 
  • Collaborate with affiliated companies, industry peers, and associations to advance safety initiatives. 
  • Participate in incident investigations and root cause analyses, as required. 
  • Support emergency response and business continuity planning and execution, as required. 

Education, Skills and Experience

  • 10+ years of experience working in the energy sector (e.g., oil and gas, natural gas liquids, midstream, or petrochemical operations), with strong knowledge of the risks associated with process facility and pipeline operations, maintenance, and construction. 
  • 5 years working directly for an energy infrastructure, petrochemical, midstream, or oil and gas operator. 
  • Undergraduate degree in occupational health, safety, industrial hygiene, risk management, or a related field. 
  • A recognized professional OHS certification, such as Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (CMIOSH), or an equivalent designation. 
  • A project management and/or change certification is considered an asset. 
  • Proven ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, regulatory agencies, and cross-functional teams. 
  • Strong understanding of management systems and systems thinking. 
  • Experience managing enterprise-level H&S projects, including the use of project charters, plans, stakeholder engagement strategies, change management plans, implementation schedules, Gantt charts, and risk registers. 
  • Proficiency in developing, implementing, and sustaining comprehensive H&S programs. 
  • Demonstrated experience in leading or supporting cultural change initiatives, safety leadership programs, or behavioral safety strategies. 
  • Knowledge of organizational behavior, safety climate assessment tools, and employee engagement strategies. 
  • Ability to design and analyze safety culture assessments, surveys, and focus groups. 
  • Familiarity with performance metrics related to safety culture, such as leading/lagging indicators, observation programs, and employee perception measures. 
  • Proven track record of working with senior leadership to influence organizational attitudes and behaviors toward safety. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of “Safety Differently” and Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles. 
  • In-depth knowledge of safety leadership programs and contractor safety management systems. 
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills. 
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable OHS legislation. 
  • Experience conducting H&S assurance activities such as inspections, observations, reviews, and audits. 
  • Advanced proficiency with HSE and work management platforms, such as Enablon, sdsBinders, and Maximo. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, organizational, and time management skills. 

Hours

  • Full Time, Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day 
  • This is a primarily office-based position with required travel (up to 20% annually) to Inter Pipeline’s operational, construction, and reclamation sites.
  • Worksites include hydrocarbon processing facilities, petrochemical manufacturing plants, and hydrocarbon transmission pipelines.
  • Occasional overnight travel will be required for distant site visits. 

 

As this position is identified as safety and security sensitive, employment of a final candidate will be conditional upon completion of pre-employment medical, drug/alcohol, driver's abstract and criminal background check assessments with satisfactory results.
