Description
Based at the Heartland Petrochemical Complex (HPC), just north of Fort Saskatchewan, the Engineer in Training (EIT), Chemical Engineering role will work under the mentorship of the Manager, Process & Operations Engineering.
This position will collaborate closely with Operations, Maintenance, technical specialists, and other cross functional teams to support safe, reliable, and efficient plant performance within an integrated operating facility.
This is a development-focused role designed for an early career engineer who is eager to grow technical capability, operational knowledge, and professional judgment within the chemical engineering field. The successful candidate will gain exposure to day to day plant operations, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement initiatives, while building strong working relationships across the organization.
Key Activities and Responsibilities
• Support Operations, Maintenance, and Technical Services teams as a developing technical resource, gaining hands on exposure to plant operations
• Learn and apply plant process technology fundamentals across the site with coaching from experienced engineers
• Complete assigned process engineering analyses, calculations, and deliverables with guidance and progressive independence
• Analyze plant operating data to help identify improvement opportunities and support the development of technical solutions and business cases
• Participate in process troubleshooting activities to build problem solving skills and practical engineering judgment
• Support Process Safety Management (PSM) activities, including hazard reviews, incident investigations, and Management of Change (MOC) processes
• Assist in identifying and developing capital improvement opportunities that contribute to short and long term plant performance
• Support the execution of engineering and capital projects in a team environment, learning project lifecycle fundamentals
• Participate in safety culture initiatives, audits, and compliance activities to reinforce safe and responsible engineering practices
• Develop technical knowledge and experience over time to progress toward becoming a trusted plant process engineering resource
Education, Skills and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from an accredited university
• Registered as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with APEGA
• 0–3 years of relevant experience, including co op, internship, or summer student experience in the Petrochemical or oil and gas sector
• Strong foundation in process engineering fundamentals such as mass and energy balances, thermodynamics, fluid flow, and process safety
• Ability to analyze and interpret operating data to support technical problem solving and continuous improvement
• Demonstrated interest in plant operations, equipment, and industrial processes, with willingness to spend time in the field
• Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment
• Class 5 drivers license in good standing
• Commitment to safety, professionalism, and ethical engineering practice
Hours
Full-time, 9 hours per day, every other Friday off (9x80 shift)
This position is based full-time on site. There is no public transportation and therefore the successful candidate must have access to reliable transportation to get to and from site daily.
As this position is identified as safety and security sensitive, employment of a final candidate will be conditional upon completion of pre-employment medical, drug& alcohol, education, drivers abstract, criminal background check assessments with satisfactory results.
