Description
Based out of the HPC facility in the Alberta’s Industrial Heartland near Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, the Central Utilities Block (CUB) Operations Technicians report to the Poly Propylene and Central Utilities Block Shift Supervisor (SS) for their assigned team. They work within a small and close-knit team that is responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable operations (both field and console) of the CUB.
The successful candidate will be required to train and qualify in the CUB Boiler and Cogen Field positions and to progress to the CUB console position within the timelines as per the HPC Operations Technician Progression program and be required to remain current and available to work additional time within their qualified positions of their first unit.
If the candidate is internal, the successful candidate will be deemed releasable by their respective unit management.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Minimum 3rd Class Power Engineering certificate in good standing with ABSA. (preference given to individuals with progress towards their 2nd class certification) Plant needs may dictate that the individual must achieve their 2nd class.
- 5+ years Operations experience with preference given to individuals with cogeneration facility experience including water treatment and electrical infrastructure.
- Strong technical understanding of plant processes and equipment, maintenance practices, process safety, safety instrumented systems, chemical safety, and emergency response plans is desired.
- Strong analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills,
- Unwavering commitment to health, safety, and environmental protection,
- Strong communication and technical writing abilities.
- Attention to detail and well-developed interpersonal skills are required.
- Ability to work a rotating, 12-hour day/night shifts.
Key Activities and Responsibilities:
- Utilize and improve operational procedures.
- Develop and install and control lock out/tag outs.
- Prepare equipment for maintenance/return equipment from maintenance
- Create corrective work order requests
- Issue and control unit work permitting
- Performs routine operating tasks (i.e. monitor levels, temperatures, pressures, etc.)
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and mitigate/escalate operating area abnormal conditions
- Responds to emergencies and upset conditions ensuring that established procedures are followed.
- Interpret lab sample results and make process adjustment as required
- Performs housekeeping duties and operational maintenance as assigned
- Communicate efficiently and effectively with cross shift, with shift team members, and across operating areas, through verbal and written methods, including shift logbooks as per ABSA Power Engineering Regulations.
- Progress through all three area posts in CUB including the control room console using DCS/SIS (Emerson), andPCS7 (Siemens) systems.
- The Successful candidate may be required to become a member of the Emergency Response Team
- Work Full time shift work (days/nights) on a 5/5/4 schedule as well as work overtime as required to support crew compliment, as well as turnaround and projects support when required.
- Longer term this position will regularly rotate between console and field. As this position is identified as safety and/or security sensitive, employment of a final candidate will be conditional to the candidate passing examinations and testing as required.
