Description
The Student, Occupational Health & Safety will report to the Supervisor of Heartland Petrochemical Complex (HPC) Health and Safety, and will have an opportunity to work closely with Health and Safety; Occupational Hygiene; and Environment and Regulatory subject matter expert.
Based at HPC located in Strathcona County near Fort Saskatchewan this is a summer student role within the HSSE Department. The Student, Occupational Health & Safety, is responsible for supporting the development, implementation and maintenance of health, safety, occupational hygiene, and environmental practices that promote industry leading performance and support the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of the Heartland Petrochemical Complex.
Key Activities and Responsibilities
Support assessment of risks in the workplace with respect to physical, chemical and/or biological hazards which may include;
*Noise surveying of process plants
*Heat Stress Monitoring
*Domestic water sampling
*Fume hood Assessments
*Ventilation / Confined Space testing
• Assist in providing recommendations to reduce the risk of employee exposure to workplace hazards;
• Participate in field hygiene sampling which may include air / fume / particulate sampling
• Respond to occupational hygiene concerns with Hygienist or Hygiene Technologist
• Prepare and communicate educational resources and technical aids for occupational hygiene curriculum;
• Audit with focus on occupational health and safety programs, policies and procedures;
• Identify appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to protect employee from exposure to occupational hygiene related hazards;
• Assist in SDS database management
• Assist in hygiene sampling data management in Enablon
• Support Health and Safety communications which may include bulletins and PPE Matrixes
• Prepare reports outlining concerns, objectives, and recommendations;
• Support the development of occupational health and safety plans, occupational hygiene sampling, hazard assessments when IPL is the prime contractor and monitor safety plans of the prime contractor when IPL has assigned the responsibility to a third party.
• With support from the site Environment and Regulatory staff, provide onsite environmental presence to interface directly and efficiently with all operational units, providing guidance on environmental and regulatory matters for site
• Ability to work in both office and field environments in different seasons to support operations in achieving site environmental best practices and regulatory requirements.
Education, Skills and Experience
• Must be currently enrolled in a related post-secondary program
• Pursuing a diploma degree in Environment, Health, Safety, or related science field
• Oil and gas experience would be considered an asset
• Attention to detail, superior organizational skills, critical thinking skills, combined with the ability to multi-task required
• Ability to work independently and cohesively in a team
• Ability to work in a fast pace and timeline driven environment
• Excellent analytical and communication skills
• Strong computer skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Visio, Teams) required
• Ability to be fit tested and wear an air purifying respirator
• Experience in environmental monitoring programs and field support considered an asset
• Exceptional analytical, investigative, and organizational skills
Heartland Petrochemical Complex (HPC), Strathcona county, located north of Ft Saskatchewan, 30 km from Edmonton. Successful candidate must have access to reliable transportation (no bus services)
Hours:
Full time, May to August 2026
Monday – Friday, 9X80 Schedule (9 hours days, every second Friday off)
As this position is identified as safety and security sensitive, employment of a final candidate will be conditional upon completion of pre-employment medical, drug & alcohol, criminal record check and driver’s abstract assessments with satisfactory results. Additionally, candidates will be required to adhere to company policies including those that relate to the proper use of personal protective equipment.
